    1-Disposal of Solid Waste:

The three main ways of  solid waste disposing are burying, burning and recycling it.Burying solid waste in open landfills is dangerous  and can pollute the soil and groundwater.Sanitary landfills are safer because they  have clay caps to keep the rainwater out. A better  solution is solid waste composting.

Incineration has some advantages over landfills.Incinerators take up less space and don't pollute groundwater. The heat produced by burning solid waste can be used to generate electricity.Recycling reduces the amount of solid waste and saves the energy needed to get  and process raw materials.

    2Recycling:

Recycling is the process of reclaiming raw materials and reusing them. It reduces the volume of solid waste.

Recycling also saves the energy needed to get and process raw materials.

Most recycling involves four main categories of product:metal, glass, paper and plastic.Common metals like iron and aluminium can be melted down and reused.Recycling glass is easy and cheap.Recycling metals also saves money and causes less pollution than processing raw materials. Most paper products can only be recycled a few times. When we recycle common plastic products, the new plastic can take on very different forms. However, recycling is not a complete answer to solid waste problems.

    3-Incineration:

The burning of solid  waste is called incineration. This process has more advantages over  landfills. Incinerators take up less space and do not pollute groundwater. The heat produced by burning solid waste can be used to generate electricity.

Unfortunately incinerators also have disadvantages. For example, they release some pollution into the air. And although incinerators reduce the volume of waste by as much as 90% ,some waste still remains, and this has to be got rid of somewhere. Incinerators also cost much more money to build than landfills.

    4-Daily life in Space:

Daily life in outer space is different from that on Earth. In space eating is not easy. Astronauts eat food from plastic containers and suck liquids  out of sealed packages. They wash themselves with ethanol cloths or wet towels because they can not use running water on board.

Sleeping is also different because there is no day and night in space,so sleep is planned when it is most convenient. They have to sleep in small compartments using sleeping bags.Astronauts also need to do about two hours of exercise a day to keep the bones and muscles strong. All in all, life inside an airtight space station is not as comfortable as that on Earth.

5-( IT)     Information Technology is the foundation of much of the world we live in today. The term "Information

Technology" emerged in the 1970s,but can in fact be traced back to World War II.IT has a wide range that refers to the design, development and management of computer-based information systems. In other words, IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to change, store, process, send and retrieve information safely.IT also includes various disciplines  ,such as Data Management,Computer Networking,Software and computer Engineering. In recent years, the field has grown to include mobile phones, computer games and video technology.

    6-The Future of the Internet:

In the last 30 years, the internet has grown dramatically and this growth is going to continue. The internet has changed the way people communicate with each other .Some Internet experts also predict that it will provide a

parallel reality to our own. Virtual Reality will help people to live, work and interact with others in an electronic world, driven by the Internet, while others believe that Virtual Reality will encourage people to stay out of human society. It is certain that the Internet, and information Technology in general, will continue to transform the world we live in, in ways we have yet to imagine.

7-Positive and negative effects of Caffeine on the human body:

Caffeine is a stimulant found in many plant species. The most common natural sources of caffeine are tea, coffee and cocoa. Caffeine has positive and negative effects on the human body. When a person takes it in small amounts, blood vessels expand, the brain gets more oxygen and it makes one feel more alert and less sleepy. It is considered

    harmless to most people.

On the other hand, when it is taken in large amounts, it may cause nervousness, loss of sleep, rapid heart rate and headaches. Did you know that a dose of 10 grams of caffeine is  lethal?

    8-A famous scientist(Edison The Inventor):

Thomas Alva Edison was born in the USA in 1847.Very early  in his life he showed that he was full of curiosity.

In 1869 he went to New York, where he worked as a telephone operator. But soon became interested in invention.

Many of his experiments had failed, while others succeeded. His first great invention was a system of telegraphy. After that,he invented the phonograph. His most useful and famous invention was the electric lamp. Nowadays all the world enjoys the benefits of his great inventions.Edison seldom thought of danger. He died in 1931.------------------------------------------

    10-(An Informal letter(SB P 21):

                                                                                                                                               Al-Giza,

                                                                                                                                               Egypt.

                                                                                                                                                 4th May

    Hi Ali,

How are you?I hope the summer work is going well.Have you decided where to go on holiday?

Anyway, we are camping here near the pyramids. It is very hot here and we are staying on a campsite near the most beautiful ruins in Egypt.Every early morning,we go walking to explore the site.We have taken photos of everything

here.At one o'clock,we go back to our tents to have lunch.Everything is going well here, and we are very happy, but

yesterday one of the group got lost ,so we looked for him and found him.Last week we met a nice group from Italy and we had dinner together.Well,I must finish now.I have to go to bed early.

                                                                   All the best      Ahmed

11-You have won a holiday.Decide where to go and give reasons for your choice)(SB p20)

I have won a holiday.I'd prefer to go to Latakia to have fun on its beautiful beaches. In addition,I'd like to do some watersports in the sea.Not only that,Lattakia is also famous for its coastal mountains,so I'd go rock climbing because it has been my hobby since I was a child. There are some advantages and disadvantages to this trip.On the one hand,a visitor to this area won't face any difficulties because everything is well-organised and accommodation is available, either in  tents or hotels. The prices are also cheap. On the other hand, the area is very cold. In addition,

there are no regular flights to Lattakia and vice versa. Despite this the trip is worth going on.

    12-A Film you have recently seen(SB p27)

I have recently seen a film called "Gladiator. This film is a historical action film.A group of TV stars acted in this film and it was directed by a famous director.I think this is a great film because the characters are well-drawn and the plot as well as the script are fantastic. The photography was also nice. The fight scenes were almost realistic, but the emperor was nasty. The best scene in the film was the first gladiator fight .All in all, the film was great and I advise people to see it.

    13-Writing  a story(SB p32):

It was a beautiful day in spring and the sun was shining. The night before,my friends and I had decided to go canoeing down the river We had arranged to meet at 4 o'clock. When we had got everything ready,we set off down the river. After canoeing for a few miles, the sky became cloudy and it began to rain heavily.Later,we came to some rapids, and I was terrified

A friend of mine,Ali,was lost.We looked for him everywhere, but that was in vain.We called the emergency services for help.Immediately  they came and found him on the bank of the river .Ali was weak and had a leg injury,so they took us to the local hospital to check out his injuries.Luckily,he was okay and they let him out. While we were going home,we talked about how lucky Ali had been.It had been a long and tiring day,but we felt very happy to be back home.

14-Write a short description of different areas to visit and things to do in Syria(SB P37)

Syria is  a lovely country. It is a mixture of old and new.Tourists from all over the world visit it yearly to enjoy its beautiful beaches as well as its great shopping centers.

The most interesting place to visit in Syria is the "Great Umayyad Mosque",which is in Old Damascus next to Al-Hamidyeh Souk, which is a souk for everything.Tourists can also  visit Damascus Citadel, which is the only fortress in Syria that is not built on top of a hill.or mountain. The National Museum and Mount Kassioun are also tourist attractions. When you come to Syria ,don’t forget to visit the gates and walls of the old city.

15-Write an article for the local newspaper about the traffic in Syria(SBP50-51)

The number of cars on the roads in Syria has gone up by 30% in the last ten years. This has led to an increase  in the number of road accidents and deaths.

Recent studies have shown that over two thousand people die every year in road accidents, most of them are children.

Another serious problem is air pollution caused by poisonous gases emitted by cars.Thousands of deaths per year are caused by air pollution.

Personally,I think this problem can be solved by improving the bus service, which helps reduce the number of cars so as to get cleaner air.

In short ,by building more car parks, improving the public service, putting more traffic lights, building tunnels and bridges as well as making pedestrian crossings,we can make  our streets safer

16-Write a letter to your local newspaper giving your opinion about a local problem:( SB p 64).

                                                                                                                             9th May,2009

    Dear Editor,

I am writing to protest about the proposal for a new airport. Many people have been against the idea from the start, while the government is planning to go a head with the building next year.

First, the government says that the airport will bring us industry and jobs This airport will ruin the character of a historic country town, but it would bring tourists.

Despite what the government says,it is clear that the airport will also affect our health.Air pollution will get worse and this will affect people.Noise pollution will also have an effect on the houses and schools near the airport..

I think it is better to cancel the whole idea and think of a more fruitful project.

I look forward to reading more letters about this issue in your newspaper.    Yours Tom

    17-The most unusual adventure in your life:(A B p33)

It was sunny and cool, so my friends and I went to the wood last week. When we got there ,we heard a boy crying.

This boy was in a river and he was about to sink and die, so I ran fast and helped him escape. After that his parents came and thanked me because I helped their son.I was very happy as I did that good deed. When we went home,I told my mother about that thing,so she was very proud of me and encouraged me to help others everywhere.

18-You have researched the problem of traffic and safety for children in your area, and you are not happy with the results. Write a report for your local council:(A B p 61)

    To the local council

    From Ali Ahmed Date:15.5.2009

    Subject:The problem of traffic.

The aim of this report is to speak about the main dangers we have because of the heavy traffic. A lot of people complain about this problem as there is only one zebra crossing next to each school and this is not enough.Besides, the traffic lights near schools are not working at all. Moreover, the number of police officers and traffic wardens is not enough. they are seldom seen in the school areas. Also, drivers exceed the speed limit and ignore the traffic rules.

We appeal to your council to help us solve this problem.

There are some good things that no one can deny. For example, there is a free car park around the town. The public transport is also good. All of us should work hard to solve the problem.

    19-A profile about Syria:(S B p68)

Syria is a great Arab country. It is located in Asia.It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.Its neighbours are Turkey,Iraq,Jordan,Lebanon and Palestine. Syria consists of 14 cities besides Badiyat  al-Sham. The capital,Damascus,is one of the oldest cities in the world. Arabic is the native and official language in Syria.

Now Abu Shadi is climbing to his raised chair, book in hand and sets his sword across his knees, facing the audience.Today he is telling a small part of the epic tale of Sultan Baybars.

The episode begins and Abu Shadi is reading from his book.He uses body language and a sing –song voice ,and he alternates between comic and dramatic, quiet and loud. Now it is a moment of high tension as Abu Shadi is describing one of the battles,so the sword crashes down on the metal table.Abu Shadi laughs because he has everybody's attention. Some of the locals begin to join in taking parts and the whole café is full of loud noises. Then at the end of an hour,he stops and the episode ends at a moment of tension. In fact,I look forward to seeing another episode.

Syria  has started producing Sham cars since 2009.It is the national car of Syria.Sham's plant is located in the industrial city of Adra. This car has a strong body and an advanced chassis, which make the car one of the safest saloon cars ever built. The interior of the car is comfortable and spacious.Sham is also fitted with the most up-to-date equipment as well as a huge boot, which can be reached from inside the car.It

has a powerful, fuel engine, which does not produce a lot of pollution.Sham consumes very little fuel and it is cheap,so it is one of the best- selling cars.

A lot of Japanese cars like Honda Civic,Mazda 323 and Nissan Sunny sold very well. However, the Toyota Corolla is one of the best-selling cars of all time.

    24-Discuss advertisements and advertising: (S BP 65)

The media are getting more and more powerful.Ads are found everywhere. In newspapers, magazines,on radio, television, in streets, roads and all over public places. These ads have affected our personal lives.Producers use ads to lure  people to buy their products.I think it is legal, but the way of advertising is illegal. It is bad and causes headache because it does not observe the feelings and needs of consumers. All ads try to make people buy things they  don't really need..I think the government should observe these ads,so we will have some consumer education.

25-Write a letter to a newspaper about the quality of programmes on Tv:(AB:p49)

TV programmes affect the young and make them behave badly.

However,I am happy that I write to inform you,but at the same time I feel sad that you may

neither take action nor give help.

26-Write a composition about'How does the eye work?

The eye is made up of many layers, each one plays a part in transforming the light that reflects off objects into images we can recognize.Tiny muscles around the iris control the amount of light that flows in through the pupil. The lens focuses the rays of light so when they hit the retina at the back of the eye, they form a clear image.the retina is made up of millions of rods and cones that detect light, dismantle it and convert it into  nerve impulses which travel along the optic nerve to the brain.
